The horse and summer
Summer is a season “to be managed” in a “sensible” way when you have animals you care about, especially if the temperatures are particularly high like these days. With a little attention and a few simple tricks we can make the summer for our horse friends a pleasant moment.
Horses sweat a lot in the summer, both at rest and during work. This happens because the horse uses sweat to lower the body temperature of the stomach, neck and kidneys. The mechanism of sweating is precious for your health, but it is necessary to replenish fluids and mineral salts to avoid the risks associated with dehydration. A shower before going back into the box is a great way to remove sweat and cool the whole body.
It is important to protect our horse friends from annoying insects by making them wear caps, masks or anti-fly blankets, and protecting them in a natural way with garlic-based food supplements or sprays enriched with essential oils. Insects are always annoying for the horse, both in the case in which they bite, like mosquitoes, gadflies or horse flies, and in the case in which “simply” buzz around, like flies.
Here are some tips to spend this season of the year at its best:
- work the horses in the coolest hours of the day, early in the morning or in the evening
- supplement the diet with mineral salts (on the market there are many types and prices)
- never miss refreshing showers at the end of the work session
- pay particular attention to the limbs and tendons with special refreshing and restorative showers, boots and gels
And now everyone in the saddle!
